Kirkwood

Kirkwood offers ideal in-town living for Atlanta residents, with its friendly and diverse neighbors, a strong sense of community and beautiful historic homes. The start of residential development in Kirkwood goes all the way back to the 1870’s. Although it is not considered a suburb of Atlanta today, back then, it was considered a streetcar suburb with express service to and from Atlanta three times daily.

By 1922, Kirkwood had been annexed into the city of Atlanta after operating as its own municipality for over 30 years. Since then, the area has generated a diverse population and has been undergoing a re-emergence with a recent influx of new residents looking to renovate some of the great historic homes. The rise and fall of this part of Atlanta is exhibited by the destruction of East Lake Meadows, a notorious government housing project. Now in its place, is the Villages of East Lake, where crime is down tremendously and a new charter school has replaced the old, run-down elementary school.

Some of the other great features throughout Kirkwood, East Lake and Edgewood are the new state-of-the-art YMCA. The area is also located on the PATH, a multi-use urban trail that is enormously popular with local cyclists, runners, walkers, and rollerbladers. The country club in East Lake is home to an annual PGA Tour event. The area also features great eateries and local shops that add to the sense of community and ensure that you will be happy to call Kirkwood home.
